FAQ
Why can kitebuggies go against the wind?
By carving a zigzag (tacking) course into the wind, similar to a sailboat. The kite provides driving force even at sidelings, and modern race kites generate enough lift to let buggies sail close-hauled.
How are kitebuggies controlled?
With feet on footrails to steer the buggy and hands on kite lines to control the kite. This requires coordination: your feet steer the front axle while you trim the kite and depower to manage speed.
Is there a safety rule about wearing a harness in a kitebuggy?
No. For safety, competitors are not harnessed. You must be able to quickly exit the buggy if needed; this is practiced during the mandatory buggy check.
What safety equipment is required for championship racing?
A helmet with chin protection is mandatory. You also need a kite control (traction) leash; many pilots wear windproof glasses, a back protector, sturdy shoes, and gloves.
How fast can a kitebuggy go?
On firm sand, experienced pilots typically reach 50–70 km/h; top speeds in competition can exceed 80 km/h. The current record on a dry lake is 135.34 km/h.
Where can I try kitebuggy for the first time?
Wide, firm beaches like Sankt Peter-Ording, Borkum, Rømø, or Texel are ideal. Most beginners start with a lesson from a certified kite school; the GPA also offers youth camps for newcomers.
Who can enter a GPA regatta?
Anyone with a valid GPA kitebuggy license. Classes include Club Class for newcomers and DepowerClass for experienced racers.
How is the winner decided?
The first to complete the final lap after the time limit, having crossed all turning marks, wins. A green flag signals the final lap.
What happens during the mandatory buggy check?
Before a run, pilots show they can exit the buggy safely. If a buggy is deemed unsafe or the pilot is stuck, they must retire from that race.
Can I race if I’m new to the sport?
Yes. The ClubClass is designed for beginners; you’ll need a license, which can be obtained after a short GPA course or by demonstrating competence.
