About
Celebrating Slinfold’s legendary runner Alf Shrubb, the event returns with a 10k trail race, a 5k, and children’s races to raise funds for local community causes.

Both races are expected to fill quickly in 2026.<\/p>\n\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Why Take Part?
<\/h3>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li>Support <strong>local community causes<\/strong><\/li>\n\t<li>Run through the <strong>beautiful Sussex countryside<\/strong><\/li>\n\t<li><strong>Chip-timed races<\/strong> for accurate results<\/li>\n\t<li><strong>Events for all ages,<\/strong> including children’s races<\/li>\n\t<li><strong>Refreshments, cakes and a fully licensed bar<\/strong><\/li>\n\t<li><strong>Plenty of facilities<\/strong>, including additional ladies-only toilets<\/li>\n\t<li><strong>Replica Alf Shrubb medal <\/strong>for all race finishers<\/li>\n\t<li>Prize category winners receive a <strong>winners certificate<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<hr \/>\n<h3>The Races<\/h3>\n\n<p>The <strong>10k and 5k mixed trail races <\/strong>start in Slinfold and take runners through the scenic <strong>West Sussex countryside<\/strong>, using a combination of local footpaths, bridleways and trails.<\/p>\n\n<ul>\n\t<li><strong>10k<\/strong> – two scenic laps finishing at <strong>Slinfold Cricket Club<\/strong><\/li>\n\t<li><strong>5k<\/strong> – closely similar scenic route but one lap only<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n<p>All races are <strong>chip timed<\/strong> and finish on the cricket pitch.<\/p>\n\n<p>The <strong>5–7 year-old race <\/strong>takes place at <strong>Slinfold Cricket Club<\/strong>, which also serves as <strong>event headquarters<\/strong> for race number collection and warm-ups.<\/p>\n\n<p>A <strong>professionally led warm-up<\/strong> will take place on the cricket field before runners move to the s<strong>tart line on Clapgate Lane<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Race Day Atmosphere<\/h3>\n\n<p>Refreshments will be available throughout the day including <strong>tea, coffee, soft drinks and plenty of homemade cakes<\/strong>. The <strong>cricket club’s fully licensed bar<\/strong> will also be open.<\/p>\n\n<hr \/>\n<h3>About Alf Shrubb<\/h3>\n\n<p>Born in <strong>Slinfold in 1879, Alf Shrubb<\/strong> became one of the greatest distance runners of his era.<\/p>\n\n<p>He won the <strong>1901 National Cross-Country Championship<\/strong> by an extraordinary 350 yards, later <strong>breaking the three-mile world record<\/strong> in 14:17.6, which stood for <strong>29 years<\/strong>. By 1904 he held the <strong>world records at 1½, 2, 3 and 4 miles<\/strong>, and in 1905 in Glasgow he famously <strong>broke seven world records in one evening<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<p>A pair of <strong>Alf Shrubb’s running shoes<\/strong>, normally held at Horsham Museum, will be <strong>on display at the Cricket Club on race day<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n<hr \/>\n<h3>Supporting the Community<\/h3>\n\n<p>The event <strong>raises funds for local organisations and community causes<\/strong>, and we are proud of the donations made in recent years.
