The Comrades Marathon is renowned as the Ultimate Human Race, showcasing the resilience and endurance of runners. Set to occur on Sunday, June 14, 2026, this iconic event will see participants traverse 85.777 km in the shortest Up Run distance in recent history.
There will be aid stations along the route providing runners with refreshments and nutritional support, including drinks and snacks. The partnership with Vaseline ensures that physio stations stocked with their products will also be available to combat skin irritation throughout the race.
Pacing teams will be available to help runners finish within their target times. The runners will have a structured start time based on their estimated finish times, and pacers will guide participants through the race to help them achieve their goals.
Monthly averages based on historical data (2000–present).

The domicile rule will be strictly enforced. No participant may run for a club other than a club registered in the province in which they are domiciled unless they appear on the current ASA National Athletes List. Athletes MUST submit their club’s name and issued 2026 licence number to the CMA by latest 16h30 on 4 May 2026. Failure to submit this information will result in the entry being rejected. Foreign Athletes : where foreign athletes are entered through a South African Athletic Club, it is the responsibility of the club to assist the athlete in observing all WA and ASA Competition Rules and Technical Rules. Foreign athletes are to accept the disclaimer/waiver as part of the entry process, and if required under WA athletics rules, produce a letter from their federation permitting their participation. Athletes who attempt to run the Comrades Marathon without a valid entry will be reported to the Race Referees for disqualification and may face further disciplinary actions. What is the qualifying criteria? To qualify and participate in the 2026 Comrades Marathon, athletes need to adhere to the qualifying criteria below. The cut-off date for supplying the information below and completing the entry is 4 May 2026. Athletes must update their qualifying details by either updating their online entry profile, emailing the CMA office, or by requesting their club administrator to do so. Qualifying details will NOT be accepted under any circumstances after 4 May 2026. This includes Race Registration. Qualifying Criteria: SA Athletes must submit their club’s name and 2026 permanent licence number. All athletes must complete the medical questionnaire (available by logging into their online entry profile once entered). All athletes must run at least one qualifying race between 9 June 2025 and 4 May 2026. All qualifying races must be ASA technically compliant, not shorter than 42.2km, and meet the Comrades Marathon qualifying criteria. Please see below Qualifying Table for official distances and qualifying times. SA Athletes Qualifying times will be submitted for verification to their running club with which they are registered. International athletes qualifying times will be submitted to the international qualifying race organisers for verification. It however remains the athlete’s responsibility to ensure that their qualifying details are updated accordingly and before 4 May 2026. QUALIFYING TABLE DISTANCE OF RACE TIME 42.2km 4:59:59 48km 5:59:59 50km 6:09:59 52-54km 6:29:59 56km 6:59:59 60km 7:39:59 64km 8:14:59 80km 10:34:59 90km 11:59:59 100km 13:34:59 Failure to meet the above stipulated qualifying criteria will result in the athlete’s entry being rejected. The athlete will not be able to participate, their details will be removed from the entry database, and they will NOT receive a race t-shirt or goodie bag. Only official results, as published, will be accepted (i.e. no Garmin, Strava or any other personal tracking device information will be accepted). How was seeding calculated? The allocation of the Start Groups is based on around 47% of runners being allocated to Start Group 1, 31% to Start Group 2 and 22% to Start Group 3. Runners were allocated to Groups and Batches based on fastest to slowest based on the qualifying time that they submitted for a standard marathon (or equivalent over a longer distance race). As a guideline, runners with a qualification time under 04:03:00 were allocated to Group 1, those with a qualification between 04:03:00 and under 04:33:00 were allocated to Group 2 and those with a qualification time between 04:33:00 and 05:00:00 were allocated to Group 3. Why do we have cut-offs? Why can’t we just keep running? The primary purpose of cut-offs is to ensure the race route can be safely managed and public roads reopened, while still giving runners every reasonable opportunity to complete the race within the official 12-hour limit. The intermediate cut-off points are therefore calculated based on the likelihood of runners finishing within 12 hours, and all are designed to be slightly generous. This means that a runner going through a bad patch and who can still go faster later in the race will be allowed to continue, at least until the next cut-off, but those runners who do get cut-off are deemed to be too far behind the required pace to finish the race successfully. Why has the cut-off system been changed? The enhanced ‘traffic light’ cut-off system is designed to provide runners with clearer pacing guidance throughout the race, while ensuring the safe reopening of roads and allowing operational teams to begin the systematic breakdown of race infrastructure. The colour indicators will give runners a clear indication of where they stand throughout the day, and what pacing is required to remain on track for a finish. How will the Start of the race work? The three groups will start with 15 minutes between them: Group 1: 05h00 (Batches A to G) Group 2: 05h

The introduction of two start groups for last year’s Down Run was designed to ensure runners’ safety, and improve the runners’ experience. This stemmed from the numerous safety concerns raised by runners regarding the start of the 2023 Down Run such as batch-jumping, runners climbing over the fencing, pushing and shoving inside the batches, and the very real risk of runners being tripped, trampled and/or crushed. The 2025 race had the largest ever field for a Down Run in the history of the Comrades Marathon, and the responsibility of the organisers was to prioritise runner welfare while protecting the traditions that make the Comrades Marathon unique. Splitting the start into two groups assisted in addressing those safety issues experienced in 2023, whilst still retaining all of the Comrades traditions, such as gun-to-mat timing, the various medal cut-offs, and the final 12-hour cut-off. The split start also allowed the runners in the last start batch to cross the start line substantially sooner than in previous years – less than six minutes – thus giving them a better chance of posting a good time, or of making that final cut-off. The 2025 two-group start model delivered meaningful operational improvements, and the feedback received from runners, safety and medical personnel and technical teams confirmed that this approach positively improved both safety and the runner experience. With that in mind, the CMA is now introducing a three-group start process for the 2026 race, that will not only further enhance safety, but give runners more space to run their own race from the outset, as well as spreading the field out to ensure safer and more comfortable running at the narrower parts of the route. In short, the three-group starts will provide a much better runner experience for all runners.
The three Start Groups will have a different colour block indicated on their race numbers: Group 1: Purple Group 2: Orange Group 3: Blue Runners within each Start Group will be allocated to a specific seeding batch, which will be denoted by a letter in front of the runner’s race number, from Batch A to Batch R, but note that there are no batches I or O, to avoid confusion between numbers and letters on race day.
Yes, the CMA believes that it is important that all participating runners experience and enjoy the iconic traditions and spirit of the Comrades Marathon, including the the singing of the National Anthem and Shosholoza, and the playing of Chariots of Fire and Max Trimborn’s famous cock-crow. Group 1 runners will experience the full traditional start programme, while Groups 2 and 3 will enjoy a shortened yet equally inspirational version ahead of their respective starts. Every runner will still experience the emotion, atmosphere and iconic build-up that makes the Comrades Marathon so special.
Runners in the higher Group will be faster qualifiers than those in the next Group, and thus may not be ‘caught’ on the day, but any runner could have a ‘bad day in the office,’ go through a bad patch during the race, or could just run slower on the day than their qualifying time, so runners from a lower Group may catch or pass runners from a higher Group. Similarly, some runners in a lower Group may perform better on the day than their predicted finishing time based on their qualifying times, and they will benefit from the open road ahead of them to run faster. This means that there will be some overlap as the race unfolds, but this is expected to be minimal, which means more free running for all runners.
Absolutely! The recorded race time for each Group will start when the Group is signalled to commence running, and runners in each of the three Start Groups need to finish by the following times of day: Group 1: 17h00 Group 2: 17h15 Group 3: 17h304 A final 12-hour cut-off gun will be fired for each of the three start groups to officially mark the end of that group’s race window. However, runners will not be prevented from crossing the finish line. All runners will have their race numbers scanned after crossing the finish to verify their official finish time and status, with medal eligibility confirmed before entering the medal tent. Importantly, all runners receive the full 12 hours to complete the race, with each group’s official race time commencing at the starting signal for that group. Starting in an earlier group therefore does not provide additional time to complete the race.
The decision to start a bit later last year was purely related to safety, allowing for lighter running conditions on the darker early parts of the Down Run course, notably on the Polly Shortts descent, where the road is narrow and steep, has several twists, and has no street lights. With a 05h45 start, it meant that the first runners to get to the top of Polly Shortts would be able to descend Polly Shortts with enough light to safely see where they were going, and this would also allow medical personnel to see and reach any person requiring assistance on that narrow part of the route. In contrast, the earlier sections of the Up Run are well lit, and this allows the race to start earlier, with staggered groups, thus enhancing the safety and comfort of all participants at the stage of the race when the field is still tightly bunched. It also means that more runners will reach the final section of the race and the finish in Pietermaritzburg during daylight hours, including the stretch on the Polly Shortts climb that does not have street lights.
This plan will result in a much-improved runner experience than recent years: Reduced congestion and crowd pressure at the start. Improved runner flow across the route. Better access for medical, emergency and safety vehicles. Enhanced safety at traditionally congested sections of the course. Improved service flow through refreshment stations. Reduced pressure on runners to recover lost time after crossing the start line. More open road running and improved pacing opportunities. Improved spectator visibility and engagement. A more comfortable and enjoyable race experience for runners across all pacing groups. Improved finish-line flow and overall operational efficiency.
Runners will only be allowed to line up in their allocated start group and batch, or a batch further back within their allocated start group, if they so choose – for example, if two clubmates or a couple would like to run together, then a runner in Batch B of Group 1 can line up with their clubmate or partner in Batch E of Start Group 1. However, moving up to a higher group or batch will not be allowed. Runners will only be allowed to move back to a later start Group (e.g. from Group 1 to Group 2 or Group 2 to Group 3). Participants wishing to move to a later Start Group or Seeding Batch than the one allocated to them must email info@comrades.com requesting the new batch they would like to start in. The deadline for submission of these written requests is 16h30 (SAST) on Friday 29 May 2026, and a successful application will cost the runner R200 for administrative and printing costs. (Note that limits will be applied to the size of each batch, in order to ensure the safety of all runners.) If approved, the CMA will reprint the amended race numbers in advance and these runners must come to the Information Counter at the Race Pack Collection venue selected on their entry profile, to collect their number. The fee of R200 must be paid at the Information Counter, and only card payments will be accepted.
It is important that runners understand that cut-offs should not be used as a pacing strategy. To finish comfortably within the 12-hour time limit, and to get through all of the intermediate cut-offs, runners are encouraged to maintain a pace faster than these guidelines.
All cut-offs along the route are based on the final start group departing at 05h30, and as runners approach a cut-off point on the route, they will see the following sequence of coloured indicators displayed at that cut-off point. Green Zone – GO: Runners reaching a cut-off point within the green zone remain comfortably within the required pacing strategy needed to complete the race. Amber Zone – WARNING: Runners entering the amber zone are at the last reasonable pacing threshold. They may continue, but must pick up or maintain the required pace to reach the next cut-off point, or the finish within 12 hours. Rescue bus officials may instruct runners unable to sustain the required pace to reach the next cut-off point on time to board the official rescue vehicles. Red Zone – CUT-OFF: Any runner reaching a cut-off point in the red zone will not be permitted to continue and must board the official rescue buses.
The Green zone will be displayed at each designated cut-off point and will remain in place until the approach of the cut-off time. Approximately 10 to 15 minutes before the cut-off time, the display will change to Amber (Orange) as a warning that the cut-off time is imminent. When the display changes to Red, it indicates that the cut-off time has been reached. Participants who have not passed the cut-off point by this time will not be permitted to continue in the race.
Official rescue buses will be waiting at the various cut-off points to take cut-off runners to the finish in Pietermaritzburg. When boarding a rescue bus, a runner’s number will be recorded and the runner will be officially listed as a non-finisher, so it is not possible to board a rescue bus, then disembark further up the route and continue running.
Following every edition of the Comrades Marathon, careful examination of the race delivery, times and statistics, as well as operational improvement opportunities and runners’ feedback, is done to determine whether any changes or additions should be retained, amended or discarded.

Yes. Runners in Group 2 and Group 3 will be brought up to the Start area, in a strictly controlled process, after the last runners of the previous Group have crossed the Start line and left the Start area. There will be a substantially increased number of security officers, marshals and technical officials, and additional crowd control fencing in place, to ensure safe crowd control of the runners, as well as to ensure the smooth movement of runners for all three start groups. The event announcers will also repeat instructions throughout the process.
Runners must line up in their allocated Start Group and Batch, and no ‘jumping’ up to a higher start group or batch will be allowed. Each batch will hold around 1250 to 1400 runners, and each Group will start the race when their Group is signalled to commence running. The race announcers will keep runners informed of the programme, which Group is starting next, and when to start moving forward. Here’s how the seeding batches will line up: Group 1: Batches A to G Purple Race Number Indicator Start time 05h00 The Elite field will line up at the front of Batch A, followed by progressively seeded qualifiers through to Batch G. Approximately 9952 runners will make up Group 1. Note: Age Category Contenders will be seeded in their respective qualifying batches according to qualifying times, as per the standard seeding rules. Group 2: Batches H to M Orange Race Number Indicator Start time 05h15 A special Batch H will be positioned at the front of this group for those runners with 10 or more Comrades Marathon medals (Green Numbers) as well as those running as part of the CMA’s Race4Charity initiative who have managed to raise more than R6000 before the 4 May cut-off. Batches J to M will follow according to standard qualifying times. Around 6704 runners will start in this group. Note: Green Number Runners and Race4Charity runners with qualifying times faster than 04:03:00 will be seeded in Group 1 batches according to their qualifying times, as per the standard seeding rules. Group 3: Batches N to R Blue Race Number Indicator Start time 05h30 Runners in Group 3 will be seeded according to qualifying times across batches N to R. Approximately 4972 runners will make up this final start group. Please note: There are no Batches I or O, as these letters are excluded to avoid confusion with numerical digits.

It is very important that runners make sure they line up in the correct start group, as the timing system will pick you up and flag you as you cross the start line, and you will face disqualification after the race and possible rejection of future entry applications to the Comrades Marathon if you attempt to start the race in a higher starting group or batch. All finishing runners will have their race numbers checked when they reach the finish line, to determine which medal they have earned, and those who are identified as ‘group jumpers’ will be asked to report to the race officials before any medals can be allocated to them. Keep in mind that starting in a higher group will not save you time, or give you more than 12 hours to finish the race, as each group still has 12 hours to cover the full distance, and the intermediate cut-offs will be enforced based on the third Start Group’s Starting time of 05h30.
No, this is not true. Having a 2026 entry, or starting the 2026 race, does not guarantee 2027 entry. We have, become aware that some runners who do not intend to participate in 2026 are holding onto their entries under the mistaken belief that this will secure them a place in 2027. To be clear, retaining a 2026 entry does not guarantee entry into the highly anticipated 2027 Centenary edition, and we strongly encourage any runner who does not plan to run in 2026 to withdraw officially and make their entry available to another runner.

Will there be any other way to secure an entry for the 2026 race? No. The Substitution Process is the final and only opportunity to secure an entry for 2026. All withdrawals and substitution applications must be processed online via the official Comrades Marathon Entry System on the Comrades website (www.comrades.com ) or Comrades Marathon App during the designated windows. Take note that entries: May not be sold May not be transferred privately May not be exchanged between runners May not involve any payment between individuals If anyone offers to sell or “secure” you an entry, it is not legitimate. Why has the CMA introduced a ballot system for substitutions? The change from the traditional first-come, first-served substitution model to a ballot-based substitution system is in response to the unprecedented demand for entries for the 2026 race. Entries for 2026 sold out within 10 hours when they opened in November — the fastest sell-out in the event’s history. The ballot system ensures: Equal opportunity for all runners to apply Fair access across time zones No advantage for those able to log in immediately Reduced runner anxiety and pressure Every valid application submitted during the window will go into the draw and stand a chance of securing a substitute entry. What entry fee will I pay if successful? Standard 2026 entry fees apply: South Africa: R1200 Rest of Africa: R2000 International: R4500 The R10 transaction fee applies to all applications. Optional charity donations or “Win a Car” tickets selected during application will be included in the debit, should your application be successful. Will I receive a refund? If your entry is successfully substituted, you will receive 85% of your original entry fee. Once successfully substituted, the original entry cannot be reinstated. If your entry is not substituted, your entry remains active and you may still run the race All withdrawing runners will be notified by 10 April 2026. What about people claiming they can “arrange” an entry? These are scams. The CMA has been alerted to individuals requesting large sums (up to R3000) to arrange entries through their claimed connections. This is fraudulent. No CMA official, board member, or staff member can override the ballot process. The only legitimate pathway is the official Substitution Process, and no money or entry vouchers may be exchanged between individuals. We urge runners to remain vigilant, report suspicious activity, and not to fall victim to these scams. Why is running with someone else’s number such a serious offence? Doing this is: Illegal and a form of cheating Against Athletics South Africa regulations A serious medical risk There are very important health and safety considerations to take into account, as medical teams rely on the registered entrant’s medical history. An illegal runner receiving incorrect treatment could face life-threatening consequences. Both runners face disqualification and disciplinary action if a runner is caught using another runner’s race number. The CMA further urges runners never to run with another runner’s race number, no matter whether it is a 10km race or the Comrades Marathon. If I am unsuccessful in the ballot, will I be placed on a waiting list? No. Once the ballot is concluded, including any redraws made necessary by failed debit payments, then entry process for the 2026 race will officially close. Will I receive a new race number if I substitute in? Yes. Successful substitute entrants will receive an official race number allocated in accordance with standard seeding and batch procedures. This means that runners who already have an allocated Comrades race number from previous years will be issued with that same number. What happens if my payment card expires between application and debit? It is your responsibility to ensure that the card used during application: Is valid Has sufficient funds Will accept the transaction If both debit attempts fail, the entry will be automatically forfeited and reallocated to another entrant via a redraw. Do I need to log in immediately when the window opens? No. There is no advantage to applying first or early. All valid applications received during the three-week Substitution Window will go into the ballot draw. There is no need to: Set alarms Take leave from work Ask someone to apply on your behalf Panic You have the full application window to enter. When will the Substitution Application Window open and close? This will be a three-week application period: Opens: Thursday, 12 March 2026 at 10h00 (SAST / UTC+2) Closes: Thursday, 2 April 2026 at 16h30 Why are the application and withdrawal windows different lengths? Based on demand and the volume of enquiries received by runners wishing to secure an entry, the CMA anticipates a high number of substitution applications. The longer application window: Alleviates the stress and pressure on runners to submit their application Accommodates runners with limited internet access Accommodates international runners in different time zones Ensures fair participation and inclusivity How many substitute entries will be available? The number of available substitution entries will depend on the total number of withdrawals received during the official withdrawal period. Will additional entries be released if demand remains high? Unfortunately, not. To ensure the safety, medical planning, and effective route and finish management of all runners, the maximum number of entries must be adhered to. Therefore, the Substitution Process will be the only way runners can still secure a 2026 entry, and no further entries will be made available after the Substitution Process closes. How do I apply? Follow these steps to apply for a substitute entry: Log into the official Comrades Marathon Entry System on the Comrades website (www.comrades.com ) or Comrades Marathon App. Select “Apply for Substitution Entry.” Complete the application. Pay the non-refundable R10 transaction fee, which will be charged to your credit or debit card as part of the application process. Take note that submitting an application does not guarantee an entry – it places you into the ballot draw. When will successful applicants be notified? Successful applicants will receive a provisional notification after 2 April, and then the following process will occur: The full race entry fee will be automatically debited within 24 hours of receiving the provisional notification, from the credit or debit card used during application. This will give you time to make sure there are sufficient funds available in that account. If the first debit fails, a second attempt will be made. If both attempts fail, the entry will be automatically forfeited and reallocated to another entrant via a redraw. All applicants will receive final confirmation of the outcome by 10 April 2026. What if I am successful in obtaining a substitute entry, but do not qualify? Successful substitute entrants will have until 4 May 2026 to meet the qualifying criteria, and all standard race rules apply. Runners who fail to meet the qualifying standard by 4 May 2026 will forfeit their entries. Do I need to have already qualified to enter the ballot? No, you may enter the ballot without having qualified. However, qualification must be achieved by 4 May 2026 if you are successful. How do I withdraw? Withdrawals are only applicable to fully paid entries. Log into your 2026 entry profile on the Comrades website (www.comrades.com ) or Comrades Marathon App and select “I want to substitute my entry.” Can I nominate who receives my entry, such as a family member or clubmate? No. All substitution entries are allocated via ballot to ensure fairness. When will the Withdrawal Window open and close? This will be a two-week withdrawal period: Opens: Monday, 16 March 2026 Closes: Monday, 30 March 2026 @ 16h30 Can I cancel my ballot application after applying? The R10 application fee is non-refundable. If your application is successful you
