About

The Weipa Running Festival is a family-friendly community event on Cape York with a strong focus on physical activity, mental health and wellbeing, and showcasing Weipa to the national running community.

Catering & aid stations

Water and fruit for all registered finishers. Capeacinno Crew and Weipa Mens Shed will run a BBQ with breaky wraps. Cold drinks available for purchase from 7:00 am to 10:30 am.

FAQ

Can I volunteer at the event?

Yes — volunteers are needed for drink stations, setup, registration, timing, and the recording tent. Register your interest via the provided link.

Do any local charities benefit from the race?

Yes. Royal Flying Doctors Service is the chosen charity; $5 from every participant is donated, with the option to add an extra donation at registration.

What time does the event finish?

Approximately 11:00 am.

Are there food vendors?

Yes. Water and fruit for all registered finishers. Capeacinno Crew and Weipa Mens Shed will run a BBQ with breaky wraps. Cold drinks available from 7:00 am to 10:30 am.

What prizes are available?

All finishers receive a medal. Male and female winners in 42.2km, 21.1km, 10km, and 5km receive locally made trophies. Prize-giving is around 10:00 am, pending the last finisher.

Can I ride my bike, scooter, or skateboard alongside a friend?

No — it is not safe for runners and is not permitted on the course.

Can I run with a dog?

No — pets must stay home on race day.

Can I run with a pram?

It is free to register a child in a pram, but only for the 2.5km fun run/walk and 5km. Prams are not allowed in half marathon or marathon. Use the back of the field for safety.

Do I have to register online?

Yes — all entries are via Race Roster. There are no on-day registrations.

What is the terrain like?

Flat, dirt roads, dirt tracks, shared bitumen and concrete footpaths, and hard beach sand.

What training is recommended?

It is recommended to follow a training program for at least 8–12 weeks to prepare for the event.

Is there a cut-off time?

All competitors will be allowed to finish at their own pace, within reason. Race officials may withdraw competitors from the course if necessary.

Who can participate?

Anyone can participate in running or walking events. Age limits: Marathon & Half Marathon — 18+ (under 18 requires application); 10km — minimum 12 years; 5km & 2.5km — all ages (children 10–11 in 10km must be accompanied by a registered parent/guardian AT ALL TIMES).

Is there mandatory gear?

Yes. Marathon & Half Marathon: closed-in shoes, Smart Snake Bandage (provided), whistle (provided), water carrier ≥0.5L, headlamp (drop boxes available), race bib. 10km: closed-in shoes, Smart Snake Bandage, race bib. 5km & 2.5km: race bib. All bibs must be visible.

What roads will be closed?

Only McLeod Drive will be closed for the 5km and Fun Run.

Can I dress up in a costume?

Yes — the more fun, the better. Wear your favourite gear, make-up, or a tiara and tutu. Weipa Running Festival singlets are also available.

Can I change my entry to another distance?

Yes — you may change up or down, but there are no refunds for downgrades. Any changes must be made by Wednesday 22 July 2026 and require a price difference.

Do I have to register my child in a pram?

Yes — for insurance purposes, all participants must be recorded. There is no charge for a child in a pram.

Where is the start/finish?

Start and finish at Andoom Oval, with a staggered start from 5:00 am. Street parking is available.

What are the check-in times on race day?

Marathon & Teams: 4:20–4:45 am. Half Marathon & Teams: 5:20–5:45 am. 10km: 5:50–6:20 am. 5km: 6:50–7:20 am. 2.5km: 7:45–8:15 am.
