About

The Laich o' Moray Challenge Walks are 30 and 50 mile circular routes around Moray with a time restriction of 14 and 24 hours respectively. Both routes share the first 16 miles to Roseisle before diverging; the 30-miler heads south over Heldon Hill ridge back to Rafford Village Hall, while the 50-miler continues along the Dava Way, through coastal paths and rail trails before rejoining at Heldon Hill.

Catering & aid stations

On-course refreshment and drinks including a lunch stop; sometimes a cafe at lunch (not Pacemaker lines).

Pacers

Pacemaker/Pacer appears: event includes target times per start wave on the Renntag schedule and Pacerflaggen. Runners/jog-walk participants set off at 10:00. The 50-mile wave targets around 8–9 hours; the 30-mile wave targets around 5–6 hours. Pacers help keep waves on schedule; expect 2–6 sentences of guidance matching registration notes and Renntag timing.

FAQ

Who are these challenges for?

The Laich o' Moray Challenge walks are for experienced long distance walkers and runners. For the 50 mile challenge, participants should have recently completed walks of over 25 miles.

Do I need to be super fit?

Most reasonably fit people can cover 20–50 miles. The overall pace is about 2½–3 mph including stops. There are two walk leaders plus backmarkers, and waves are paced so staggered start times are respected.

What happens in bad weather?

Walks generally take place whatever the weather. The leader may adjust the route; in poor conditions the walk can be cancelled — this will be confirmed the previous evening on Facebook, WhatsApp, by email, and in Stop Press on the event page.

Is there a charge and do I need to book?

Social walks are free. For these challenge entries, booking via SiEntries is required; the system opens 1 March 2026 for the August event. Early booking is recommended as numbers are limited.
