About Us | Committee Members | What governs LMU? | Join the Committee | Lonely Mountain Ultra Constitution Lonely Mountain Ultra began with a simple idea in 2022. A group of runners who loved Gaanha-bula Mount Canobolas decided to create an event that would share the mountain with others. What started as an invitation to “go for a run” quickly grew into a fully-fledged trail event, an event that’s built to cater for a broad range of runners, from beginners to seasoned ultra-runners, there’s something for all, including the kids!
Water, sports drink, basic nutrition, electrolyte drink, hot water for tea/coffee, fruit, lollies, and crisps at aid stations; coffee and food vendors on-site.
Pacers are permitted for the 104K and 100M events only. For the 104K, pacers may join the last 22K loop with one pacer per runner. For the 100M, pacers may join the last two loops (32K and 22K), with one pacer per loop and a maximum of one pacer on course at any time per runner. All pacers must register, pay a $10 pacer fee, wear a race bib, and comply with gear and timing rules; pacers start each loop with their runner and must finish together.
Monthly averages based on historical data (2000–present).
To register for one of the Lonely Mountain Ultra events, please click on the button.
Yes, each race does have a capacity limit to ensure the safety of all participants. Once the limit is reached, we will no longer accept registrations.
We will be taking names on a wait list if races reach capacity. The wait list signup will be offered on our registration pages should that be necessary.

In the event of severe weather, our event committee will assess the impact on participant safety and decide to shorten or modify the courses, or cancel the event. If there is a full cancellation, participants will be offered deferral to a future date or a refund less costs incurred.

Head west out of Orange on Cargo Road. After about 15km, turn left on Mitchells Way (a well made dirt road). The entrance to race headquarters is 250 metres on the right.
There will be ample free parking on site for participants, friends and family.
Bib pickup is strongly recommended on the Friday of race weekend. Bibs for all distances but the 100Miler can also be collected on Saturday of race weekend at the event site, starting at 5am. Bib pickup closes 30 minutes prior to each race start time.
At the event site, basic provisions will be provided for participants only, including water, sports drink and basic nutrition. Each aid station will offer water, electrolyte drink, hot water for tea, coffee or soup, fruit, lollies, and crisps. Please see each event page for details for the respective aid stations. There will be coffee and food vendors at the event site on Saturday. Full details will be included in our Event Guide once published.
Detailed maps are available on a customised Lonely Mountain Ultra Google Maps page. GPX files are also available for each course. Links for detailed online course maps are below each map on our event pages.
The easiest way to view a GPX file as a map is using Google Maps: Open the Google Maps menu and selecting Your places. Select Maps → Create map. A new Google Maps window opens. In that window, select the Import button that appears underneath the Untitled layer. Upload your GPX file. The map data the file contains will appear in Google Maps. There are also lots of apps that can import a GPX file for viewing as a map: Strava, Garmin BaseCamp, FatMap, RunGo and many others.
There will be signage at key points on the course, as well as marshalls at critical points. Coloured tape will also be used to mark each race course. We strongly encourage participants to review course maps in detail. Participants in the 22K and longer races must carry a copy of the map with them. Full details will be included in our Event Guide once published.
The trails are open to the public during the event. For this reason, it’s important for you to please be aware of your surroundings at all times. Headphones will be allowed, but with one ear-bud only.
Poles are permitted for participants in Lonely Mountain Ultra. If you’ll feel safer using poles to help with uneven terrain, distributing your weight and getting better footing, by all means, please feel free to do so. Please just be conscious of others around you!
We will collect anything left behind on the trail, at the aid stations or at the event village and keep these items in our Lost & Found for at least one month after the event. If you have lost something please email info@lonelymountainultra.com.au and if we have found it you can make arrangements to collect. After one month, any items not claimed will be donated to charity.

Orange is located in the Central Western region of NSW, about 275 kilometres west of Sydney, a 3½ hour drive. We’re about a 3 hour drive north from Canberra and 2 hours west of the Blue Mountains. There are plenty of options to fly to Orange from Sydney (50 minutes), Melbourne (1 ½ hours) and Brisbane (1 ½ hours). Car hire is available at Orange airport.
Orange has a variety of accommodation options from luxury stays to budget camping. Orange360 has a directory of accommodation options, or any major travel site will have options. We do recommend booking well in advance. More information is available on our Visit Orange page.
Yes – please see the details in the section below. There are other local campgrounds as well. The closest camping nearby is Cargo Rd Wines which can be booked at Cargo Rd Wines Camping . There’s a full list of local campgrounds at Orange360 .
There are many places to eat in Orange but please make sure you book ahead of time as it is unlikely that you will be able to walk in on the night at our very popular restaurants and pubs. Don’t be disappointed! Orange360 is a great source of ideas for activities and places to eat. More information is available on our Visit Orange page.

Orange has four seasons and springtime is generally moderate, but can be rainy. Weather can vary a lot in Orange. We’re at a higher altitude than the coastal cities so it can be cooler and drier. In late September, the averages are a high of 18 degrees and low of 7 degrees. But keep your eye on the weather forecast as things can change!
We encourage training on the trails. Please note – there is some construction planned at times in the area so it’s best to check the National Parks website. If you are in the area to train on the trails, we’d love to meet you! If you want to tag along with someone, contact us and we will see if we can hook you up.
There are a limited number of campsites available at the event site, off Mitchells Way in Lidster, NSW. We recommend booking early to avoid being disappointed. You can book a campsite when registering for the event here. Camping is available for tents, campervans, camper trailers, and caravans. Please note that the camping facility is a basic one so no power or water will be provided, however there will be portaloos and enclosed cold showers available. The camping location is in a paddock with no sealed road access. Caravan and camper trailer owners must be prepared to source external assistance to remove their van/trailer from the event site before event closure if necessary.
The campsites are located in a mown paddock adjacent to the course finish line. Those not running will be able to see their friends and family finish from their tent! Please note, particularly those planning to bring caravans, the paddock is sloped. Please note a PA system will be broadcasting throughout the event so campers should expect to hear background noise while runners are still out on the course.
Campsites will be available at the event site – $20 per site for tents, $30 per site for campervans/trailers/caravans. Refunds will not be issued for camping bookings should you not attend.
The campsite will open at 4pm on the Friday of race weekend and will close at 4pm on the Sunday of race weekend. All bookings are for both nights, but you are free to come and go as required and stay only one night if you prefer.
No, but the event parking site is only a short easy walk from the camping area. The parking area is in a paddock adjacent to the campsite.
Yes! You can bring your campervan, camper trailer, or caravan. Please note that you need to be self sufficient when it comes to towing, levelling, and moving your trailer/caravan.
Each camp site is limited to two tents. While we have not placed a restriction on the number of people per site, we expect you to not intrude on the space or privacy of your neighbouring campers.
Portaloos are available both at the campsite and around the race village. Enclosed hot showers will also be provided.
No, however self contained portable cookers and BBQs are permitted.
No. The LMU hub including the camping location is on a working farm so no animals can be brought on site.
Lonely Mountain Ultra simply couldn’t happen without our volunteers. We’d love to have you join us. See our Volunteers Page for more information and a link to the form to sign up.
We have lots of different roles on offer: bib pickup and gear check, on-course marshalls, aid station teams, course marking and sweepers, and general helpers at the event village.
The volunteer registration form will allow you to select specific roles that you’re interested in, or tell us you’re willing to cover anything we need.
Most of the roles will be located at the event village, or on the course. We’ll also need help in Orange ahead of time for bib pickup and some prep tasks.
It is easiest to get to the event village or race course by car. If you don’t have one, let us know and we’ll do our best to help out.
No specific qualifications needed to volunteer, just a great attitude and willingness to help! We’ll show you exactly what’s required for each role. If you do have special skills that might be of use, please let us know in the comments.
For most of our roles, any instructions will be provided at the start of your shift. If specific training is needed, we’ll be in contact well ahead of event weekend.
Shifts vary but are generally a few hours. If you’re on one of our longer shifts, you’ll be given break times.
All volunteers will receive priority entry into next year’s event, with a discount code provided. Food and drink will be provided for longer shifts. And you’ll have our thanks and appreciation, it goes without saying!
For outdoor shifts, it’s important that you come dressed for the role and the weather. The area can be cold, particularly overnight and volunteers can get chilly if they’re not moving a lot. We recommend warm clothes including layers, and wet weather gear if needed. Good footwear is also essential. If your volunteer role includes a night shift, please also bring a headlamp or torch. We work to minimise waste at our event, so we do ask volunteers to bring their own drink bottle. Your volunteer email confirmation will include any other details specific to your role.
We’ll start assigning roles a few weeks before the event and will email every volunteer with specific roles including location and times. If you have questions at any time, just email volunteer@lonelymountainultra.com.au
