A living crust of cyanobacteria, bacteria, algae, lichen, mosses, and fungi that covers much desert soil. It’s fragile — avoid stepping or driving on it.
Leave no trace: stay on roads/trails, avoid crust, camp on bare soil, pack out trash, conserve water, and protect wildlife.
