About

Red’s Backyard Ultra is a backyard ultra set on a NSW State Cross Country course in Kembla Grange, roughly 1.5 hours south of Sydney. It is a last-one-standing event where runners complete a 6.706 km loop every hour on the hour until only one remains. Founded by Red Barnett, the event has grown into a community-driven ultra with a mix of competition, camaraderie and iconic themed loops.

Principle Brewing, Just Wing It, Steve’s Woodfire Piza Oven, Cruzin Red Cafe and Big Pink Soft Serve available across the weekend at the Event Hub.

Pacers

Event follows the official Backyard Ultra format: runners complete a 6.706 km loop every hour on the hour. If you don’t return before the next hour starts, you’re out. The format creates a last-one-standing race with pacers and target times detailed on race day for each wave.

FAQ

What is the course like?

The course consists of two sections on a NSW state cross-country course: the first section runs clockwise (red), the second anticlockwise (blue). It is relatively flat, non-technical with manicured grass and trail, marked with red and white peg flags, signs, bunting and reflective markers for night.

What are the entry fees?

First release: $230 until 30 April 2026. Second release: $240 until 17 July 2026. All entries include booking and credit card fees.

Are transfers allowed?

No transfers are offered. Red’s Backyard Ultra is a small event with a waitlist; if a spot opens, runners on the waitlist are contacted in order.

What happens if I can’t finish a lap?

If you don’t complete a lap before the next hour starts, you’re out (DNF). The race continues until only one runner remains — the Last Person Standing.
