About
New Mexico’s Premiere 10k Trail Run Challenge offering a demanding 10K and 20K course on steep alpine terrain with dramatic elevation gain and sweeping mountain views. The weekend also features the 20th Anniversary 20K and the VerticAL’s VertK vertical kilometer up AL’s Run.
Catering & aid stations
Five water/aid stations across the course. This year the Up&Over 10k & VertK are going ‘cupless’ — each runner will receive a collapsible HydraPak Speedcup with bib pickup to fill and hydrate throughout the race.
Pacers
Pacemaker events are indicated in the schedule: the Up & Over 10k (3-hr time limit) and the 20k (3hrs 15min time limit, requires a verifiable half-marton qualifying time of 2:30). The VerticAL’s VertK has a 1hr 15min time limit. See the schedule and RTF for target times per start wave.

FAQ
Q: Where and when can I pick up my bib and tee shirt?
A: Runner bag pickups will be in the Taos Tent, which is next to the ice rink in the lower plaza. Runners can pick up their bags between the hours of 3:30pm – 6pm MT on Friday, August 1st, or between 7am – 8:30am MT August 2nd on the lower plaza. Remember, you MUST wear your bib on the front of your race shirt or risk not recording a finishing time!
Q: Where is parking for packet pick-up and on Race Day?
A: Free parking is available near the Resort base, packet pick-up and start/finish line. There are plenty of spaces and parking is free!
Q: What are the age groups for the Up & Over 10k Trail Run?
A: There are no age groupings for the VerticAl’s VertK. Age groups are as follows for the 10k trail run: 19 & Under 20-29 30-39 40-49 50-59 60-69 70 & Over
Q: Will the courses be marked?
A: Yes, the Up&Over 10k Trail run will be well-marked with directional signage, yellow caution tape and Orange pin flags. The Vertic-Al’s VertK will NOT be marked, as it is an obvious course straight up the hill. Runners will not be permitted to run into the trees or banked trails on either side of the run, or risk disqualification.
Q: Where are the Aid Stations?
A: There will be Five water/aid stations across the 6.2 mile course. Important Note: This year the Up&Over 10k & VertK are going ‘cupless’ to help keep our high-alpine forest environment free of debris. Thanks to our friends at HydraPak®, each runner will receive a collapsible HydraPak Speedcup to fill and hydrate throughout the race. The SpeedCup was designed to be lightweight, easy to hold and collapsible so it can be tucked almost anywhere. Speedcups will be handed out with bibs during packet pickup on Friday – DON’T FORGET YOUR CUPS ON RACE DAY!
Q: What does the 20k course consist of?
A: The 20k course is a 2-lap version of our famous 10k course, and features almost 4,700 ft. of climbing! Not for the faint of heart or flat-landers without sufficient altitude acclimation, and there is a qualifying time of 2:30 in a verifiable 1/2 marathon required to enter the race.
Q: Can parents accompany their children in the Up&Dn Kid’s Race?
A: Yes, if parents would prefer to accompany their child during this fun run, that is fine. Parents don’t get a kids medal though!
Q: Is there a time limit for the 10k, 20k & VertK?
A: Yes there is for all three races. The Up&Over 10k Trail run will have a time limit of 3-hrs to complete for men & women. The 20k will have a time limit of 3hrs 15 minutes and requires a qualifying time of 2:30 in a verifiable 1/2 marathon to enter. The Vertic-Al’s VertK will have a time limit of 1 hr & 15 minutes. If you do not finish within the allotted time window, there is a possibility you will not post an official result.
Q: Can I use trekking poles for the Up & Over or the VertK?
A: YES, runners can use trekking poles for the Up & Over 10k Trail Run. Poles are optional and recommended for runners for the VertK.
Q: What are Safe Practices for the VertK?
A: This is a hard race that can be hazardous for the uninitiated. Below are some safety tips designed to keep you and everyone around you safe! Safe Climbing: Most Importantly – Avoid Using Rocks for Support! Never use rocks as footholds or handholds – they could be loose and dislodged, which will endanger runners below you. Plant Your Feet Securely: Do not step or push off from small or unstable rocks. Instead seek flat, solid footing to prevent slips and injuries Be Careful with Your Poles: Always control your hand-poles so they don’t block or endanger others. Point the tips down when passing or in crowds to prevent accidents
Q: Are there awards for the 10k, VerticAL’s VertK, 20k and Double-Trouble?
A: Yes – 1st Place in age groups for Men & Women will receive awards for the 10k & 20k Trail Runs. We hope to award prizes to 2nd & 3rd place in each age group, contingent on availability. First place overall for men & women in the Double Trouble combo and VerticAL’s VertK will be also be awarded for men & women.
