FAQ

Teams – does a team entry mean that three people do all of the legs of the triathlon each, or does it mean that the team members all do one leg each?

A “teams” entry is a relay entry: three members do a leg of the triathlon each (one swim, one ride, one run). Alternatively, a two-person team can be arranged where one person does two legs and the other does the remaining leg. If you want to do all legs yourself, sign up as individuals.

What is meant by the “Athena” and “Clydesdale” categories?

Athena is for female athletes with a larger body frame and higher weight (women over 80kg). Clydesdale is for male athletes with a larger body frame and higher weight (men over 100kg). These categories recognize different body types while celebrating participation across diverse shapes and sizes.

What is meant by the “Race Ya Mates” category?

Race Ya Mates allows people in different age groups to race together in the same start wave as a supportive gesture — for example, to help a friend who is nervous or to race as a group. There are no podium medals in this category, only bragging rights. To be placed together, everyone must enter as “Race Ya Mates.”

Can I do any sort of swimming stroke in the swim leg?

Yes, any stroke is allowed as long as you don’t interfere with other swimmers and it’s safe.

What if I get freaked out during the swim?

Water safety boats and boards are present. You may rest on a board or similar to catch your breath — there is no penalty for resting during the swim.

Can I wear a wetsuit in the swim?

Whether wetsuits are allowed depends on water and air temperature on the day; below 22°C water temperature wetsuits are permitted.

Do I need a swim cap?

Yes, a swim cap is required. If you don’t have one, caps are available to purchase at registration.

What happens if I get into trouble in the swim?

Raise your arm to attract water safety assistance. They will help you back to shore and there is first aid on the shoreline.

Are there facilities to wash feet before putting shoes on in transition?

No; sand will mostly stay off the transition surface as you run up, and any leftover can be wiped with your towel before putting shoes on.

Can I have someone help me in transition?

No, only competitors may enter transition. Paratriathletes may use an official handler or guide.

Do I have to bring my own bike?

Yes, bikes are not provided. The bike must be roadworthy and safe; officials will check bikes at transition.

Is a helmet required?

Yes, a helmet meeting Australian Standards is compulsory and must be worn correctly at all times during the bike leg.

What must I wear on the bike leg?

You must have a covered torso. If using a race belt, the race bib number must be on the back. Cycling shoes are optional depending on pedals.

What is drafting?

Drafting is riding too close to the competitor ahead and is not allowed. You must keep outside a 10-metre zone to avoid penalties.

Can I walk during the run?

Yes, walking is allowed. Pace yourself so you can finish.

Can I wear headphones during the race?

No, headphones are not permitted during any part of the race.

Is sunscreen provided?

Sunscreen is available at the medical tent before the event.
